The Celebrated HHH Horse Medicine and the Celebrated Indian Pain Extractor bottle were made by the same company.
Daniel Dodge Tomlinson, born in Pennsylvania, his family moved to Ohio, and then he
shows up in Stockton California by 1867. His occupation is listed as Patent Medicines.
There is a pamphlet from 1867 or 1868 from Tomlinson that lists both his Celebrated HHH
Horse Medicine and the Indian Vegetable Pain Extractor Medicine, but the western medicine
collectors have never seen the Indian bottle, and the veterinary med collectors believe the
Celebrated Indian Vegetable Pain Extractor was for horses and people. Tomlinson moved to Phila
around 1870 or 1871 and there are ads in 1872 for "Francis and Eldridge, successors to Tomlinson
and Eldridge" 920 Front Street, Phila. Therefore, he must have been in business with Eldridge in
1870 or 1871. By 1875, he is listed at 920 Front Street, Phila as "Gifford and Tomlinson" and then
Gifford shows up in 1877 in Chicago(now we know why Gifford & Co sold the HHH Horse Medicine in Chicago
from late 1870's until early 1900. It is possible Tomlinson brought the Indian bottle with him from California
in 1870 or 1871, but I believe it was made in Phila because it is similar to the HHH meds found with it.
The bottle was dug a few blocks away from 920 Front Street.
